NPR_ Open Mic Features cold_elf

Describing himself as a "nice family man who, in his free time, likes to go to battle with his laptop and a few instruments," Mark Shepherd is the man behind the band cold_elf. From Snowmass Village, Colo., Shepherd uses a G5 laptop and a variety of sounds to create his music. His album Stereo contains the track "Silvertree" and features a combination of collected sounds, instruments, samples and various clicks, beeps, and scratches that meld into peaceful soundscapes.Shephard bought his first computer in 1994 and toyed with some crude sound editing software. He says his influences include "hobos, cowboys and two-headed animals" along with more typical musical influences such as Hank Wiliams and Black Heart Procession. Professionally, Shepherd is a graphic designer. He also started what he calls a "funny project" with his two sons, the band Animals with Hair. In this band, Shepherd goes under the name of LumberPants.
